Broadway board adopts county safety and hazard mitigation resolutions; ordinance changes proposed

The Town of Broadway Board of Commissioners voted to adopt two countywide safety-related plans and discussed a package of proposed ordinance text updates at its Dec. 15 meeting.
Mayor Donald Andrews opened a public hearing on the Lee County Safety Action Plan; no public comment was received, and Mayor Pro-Tem Lynne Green moved to approve a resolution adopting the plan. The motion was seconded by Commissioner April Collins and carried unanimously. The board then approved a resolution adopting the Cape Fear Hazard Mitigation plan for Lee County following a motion by Commissioner Teresa Kelly and a second from Commissioner Laura K. Duval; that motion also carried unanimously.
Mayor Andrews presented proposed text changes to municipal ordinances that would reassign several public-health and sanitation enforcement duties (for example, references to a County Health Officer, the chief of police or a sanitation inspector) to the Town Manager or a designated code enforcement officer. The board noted the need to revisit proposed language in section 27-2, governing discharge of firearms, with Police Chief Gunter at the January 2026 meeting. Once the board approves final wording, a public hearing will be scheduled to receive public input on those ordinance changes.
