Board funds crossing guards for City of Orange schools, approves related discretionary allocations
Summary
The board approved allocations from second and third district discretionary funds to the City of Orange to fill a funding gap for crossing guards at 16 elementary campuses and approved several community resource contracts and donations in unanimous votes.
The Orange County Board of Supervisors approved supplemental district allocations on Sept. 24 to fund crossing guards for Orange Unified School District campuses and to close a funding gap reported by the city.
Second District supervisors described district community workshops that revealed strong resident concerns about student safety and school crossings. The supplemental allocations will provide gap funding to support crossing guards for Orange Unified’s 16 elementary campuses through the end of the school year. The board moved and approved both supplemental items (S37g and S37c) unanimously.
The board also accepted a retroactive donation of nine K-9s for Sheriff-Coroner units from community organizations and approved an amendment to the CalFresh Healthy Living Program contract with Community Action Partnership of Orange County to serve older adults. One public commenter questioned whether senior services had been omitted from a prior solicitation; county staff clarified the CalFresh adult nutrition funds come from the California Department of Aging and represent new money dedicated to older adults.
All three items carried without opposition.
The board noted the crossing guard funding was a joint effort between county discretionary dollars and city and school partners and characterized the allocation as a short-term measure while local budget pressures are addressed.
