Avery County commissioners approve Elk Park property purchase, adopt $302,500 budget amendment

The Avery County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously April 14 to buy a parcel at 8060 N US Hwy 19E in Elk Park for $300,000 and adopted a $302,500 budget amendment to fund the acquisition.
Michaelle Poore, the county attorney, said the purchase agreement was signed April 9, 2025. "The purchase price is $300,000 with $2,000 down. The closing will take place in 30 days on May 9, 2025," Poore said. She added that the county manager had viewed the property and believes it will meet the county's needs.
Commissioner Wood Hall Young Jr. moved to approve the purchase; Commissioner Junior Benfield seconded. The motion passed unanimously among those in attendance, 4-0 (Commissioners Tim Phillips, Dennis Aldridge, Junior Benfield and Wood Hall Young Jr. present; Robert Burleson absent).
Following the purchase vote, Vice-Chair Dennis Aldridge moved to adopt a budget amendment of $302,500 to cover the acquisition. The amendment debits Capital – Property Acquisition (105000.7415) and credits Fund Balance Appropriated (103990.0000) for the same amount. Commissioner Junior Benfield seconded the motion, which also passed 4-0.
The board convened the special meeting at 4:30 p.m. at the Avery Community Center in Newland and adjourned at 4:34 p.m. Clerk Cindy Turbyfill attested the meeting record.
