Commissioners hear VAYA Health on Tailored Medicaid plans; adopt proclamation honoring High Country Council of Governments

The Avery County Board of Commissioners received a presentation from VAYA Health and adopted a recognition proclamation at its Sept. 3 meeting.
Dustin Burleson of VAYA Health explained the state’s transition of NC Medicaid into managed care, noting the earlier launch of Standard Plans and that Tailored Plans began July 1, 2024. He said Tailored Plans cover the same services provided under NC Medicaid Direct and integrate physical health, mental health, severe substance-use services, intellectual/developmental disability services and traumatic brain injury care. “Tailored Care Managers can help schedule your medical appointments, arrange transportation and more,” Burleson said.
The board adopted a proclamation honoring the High Country Council of Governments on its 50th anniversary, noting the council’s regional services from older-adult care to transportation planning.
County Manager Phillip Barrier Jr. reported progress on broadband grants (work moving forward with Spectrum), said paperwork for the NCDIT CAB grant has been signed (the CAB grant will cover 950 locations) and that the Stop Gap grant application paperwork has been submitted. He also noted Bramble Marketing was hired by Dogwood Health Trust for county marketing oversight with Sara Price at the High Country Council of Governments, and that the county’s animal shelter moved to Mayland Community College and will be named CLASS (County Line Animal Shelter Services).
