Byrd elected interim council president as two new members are sworn
Summary
At its Nov. 25 meeting the Hudson City Council administered oaths to two newly elected at-large members and voted 4–1 to elect Councilor Byrd as interim council president to fill an unexpired term. Council also discussed the open Ward 2 seat and a resident request to let voters decide that vacancy.
Hudson City Council on Nov. 25 swore in two at-large council members and selected Councilor Byrd to serve out the unexpired term as council president.
The meeting opened with the formal oath of office for two incoming members. One oath was recorded in the transcript as, "I, Amanda Weitzley," and the other as, "I, Samantha Duramo," each pledging to support the U.S. and Ohio constitutions and to faithfully discharge the duties of office.
During public comment, residents praised outgoing council members and welcomed the newcomers. Sarah Norman, of 2212 Edgeview Drive, thanked those who had served and urged civil discourse in local government. Lisa Radagon of 84 Stratford Road also congratulated the new members and said she is "incredibly excited and enthusiastic about their tenure on council."
Later in the meeting, Councilor Duramo nominated Councilor Byrd to fill the unexpired president's term; the nomination was seconded and approved in a roll-call vote announced by the clerk as four in favor and one opposed. The chair then invited Councilor Byrd to assume the president's seat.
Council members and staff noted the council is operating with five seated members at present because a Ward 2 seat remains vacant pending certification of election results. A resident-submitted letter read into the record urged the council to let voters decide the Ward 2 vacancy rather than appointing a candidate; the letter recommended Will McGinley if the council were to appoint.
The council president election and swearing-in were procedural moves to ensure continuity of leadership, and the newly seated members and the council president said they look forward to working together on the city's agenda.
The regular meeting adjourned at 8:31 p.m., and the council recessed briefly before convening a workshop.
