Riverside EMS base construction proceeds; commissioners discuss strategic planning and superintendent search

Mr. Barrier presented a layout for a new Riverside EMS base to be sited on Riverside Elementary School property, describing a two-bedroom, two-bay facility with a 911 backup center. He said the project has started construction, will dig its own well, will use the existing sewer that has health department approval, and will not share the school driveway; Land Resource Management confirmed a repair area for sewer contingencies.
Separately, Commissioner Dennis Aldridge urged deliberate strategic planning following a leadership change and a restructured board. Aldridge said the board needs to move toward greater transparency and a more community-centered approach and raised concerns about a falling student census that will force future decisions if enrollment drops below a critical mass. Interim Superintendent Terry Worrell said the district student population is 1,763.
Pat Edwards said the Board of Education will meet the school attorney on Jan. 14 to review the superintendent search process and confirmed that applications are being vetted and references followed up. Chair Tim Phillips said he wanted more vetting in the process.
Next steps: construction of the EMS base will continue; the BOE and county will continue the superintendent search process with a meeting scheduled to review legal and process steps on Jan. 14.
