Avery County urges state, federal funding to repair Blue Ridge Parkway

The Avery County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 6 unanimously adopted a resolution asking state and federal governments to prioritize funding for repairs and strategic implementation of the Blue Ridge Rising plan for the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The resolution, moved by Commissioner Dennis Aldridge and seconded by Commissioner Junior Benfield, passed by a vote of 4-0 at the time of adoption. It endorses full funding for repairs, calls for implementation of the Blue Ridge Rising strategic plan to preserve natural resources and boost sustainable tourism, and supports creation of a coalition of elected officials and community representatives to advocate for the Parkway and surrounding communities affected by Tropical Storm Helene.
The resolution text cited that the Parkway is the most-visited unit of the national park system and referenced economic figures for the corridor that were included in the adopted language. It also directs that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to relevant local, state and federal entities and to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.
The board offered no amendments to the resolution during the meeting. The motion to adopt was recorded as unanimous among members in attendance at that point.
