Summary
At its March 26, 2025 meeting in Auburn, the Nemaha County Board of Equalization approved a motor-vehicle tax exemption for Good Samaritan Society Home Care of SE NE and granted permissive property tax exemptions to Brownville nonprofit organizations while denying an exemption request from Auburn Affordable Housing - Westbury.
The Nemaha County Board of Equalization met March 26, 2025, in the Commissioners Chambers at the Nemaha County Courthouse in Auburn and took final actions on several tax-exemption requests.
Chairman Bryan Mellage presided over the meeting. The board approved the agenda and the Feb. 12, 2025 minutes before considering exemption requests.
County Treasurer Jana Gerdes presented an Application for Motor Vehicle Exemption (Form 457) for the 2025 year. Motion by Commissioner Mike Hall, seconded by Commissioner Michael Weiss, approved an exemption from motor vehicle taxes for Good Samaritan Society Home Care of SE NE Foundation for a 2023 Chevy Equinox. The roll call vote was Bryan Mellage, Michael Weiss and Mike Hall — all voting aye.
The board then reviewed permissive tax exemption applications for real property. Commissioner Michael Weiss moved, and Commissioner Mike Hall seconded, to deny the tax-exemption request for Auburn Affordable Housing - Westbury (Parcel #640091431); the motion carried on a roll call vote (Mellage, Weiss, Hall — all aye). The board approved the application for Brownville Education Center for Arts & Humanities (Parcel #640040586) on a motion by Weiss, seconded by Hall (roll call: Weiss, Hall, Mellage — all aye).
Several permissive exemptions for properties owned by the Brownville Fine Arts Association were considered and approved in separate motions. Parcels approved include #640039537, #640039898, #640039561, #640016340 and #640016391. Each approval was made by motion (records indicate movers and seconders as Commissioner Mike Hall and Commissioner Michael Weiss) and carried on unanimous roll-call votes recorded in the minutes.
With no further business, Commissioner Michael Weiss moved to adjourn; Commissioner Mike Hall seconded, and the meeting adjourned at 10:20 a.m. County Clerk Diane Johnson subsequently certified the minutes as a true part of the official record and noted the full minutes are available at the County Clerk’s office and at www.nemahacounty.ne.gov.
Why it matters: Permissive tax exemptions reduce the taxable value of specific parcels and can affect local property tax revenues and nonprofit operating costs. These routine approvals and the denial for Auburn Affordable Housing - Westbury resolve the board’s authority over these specific 2025 exemption requests.
