Commission hears recommendation to continue inmate excess medical insurance after small daily-rate increase

Kevin (speaker 4) told commissioners the inmate excess medical insurance program under consideration is the same coverage the county has used in prior years, and that the per-inmate daily cost increased from $1.16 to $1.21. He described the coverage as a protection against medical expenses that exceed the county’s capacity to pay.
"The total amount, per inmate per day, is up just about, $5.05 cents from a dollar 16 a day to a dollar 21 a day," Kevin said, noting the increase and recommending renewal with the $1.21-per-day option. The CEO (speaker 2) agreed and referenced a recent large claim: "I think currently we have about a $55,000 claim with them." Tony (speaker 5) confirmed the claim had been paid and would be processed in the next payable run.
Commissioners expressed frustration with rising medical costs but said the insurance avoids catastrophic exposure; the item was placed on the agenda for formal action.
