"Why not turn that into a memorial park to honor this symbol that you know, symbolize what the community's just gone through," Everett said, proposing the lot (about 2,700 square feet) be formally designated as a park. Everett said the county acquired the parcel with grant funding to address blight, that the parcel is small (not suitable for housing), and that a memorial would provide an appropriate use.
A commissioner noted local fundraising interest: employees at a nearby Albertsons plan a September 27 fundraiser and offered to purchase a bronze plaque for the site. Everett said he would place the memorial-park item on next week's agenda and likely assemble a small committee — including family members or commissioners — to help design the park and recommend rules.
Next steps: Everett will bring a staff recommendation and an agenda item for the commission next week; commissioners and community volunteers are expected to be involved in committee work and a subsequent design decision.
