County commission approves $1.76 million in claims, police union contract and several routine items

The Anaconda Deer Lodge County Commission approved a slate of routine business during its Aug. 12 meeting, including payment of claims, a police union agreement and several administrative appointments.
The commission authorized payment of claims numbered 147785–147883 with the chair citing an amount of $1,762,025.17. Commissioners highlighted several large claim line items, including a $513,139.80 skating rink deposit, $349,961.19 for Country Club Road work and $317,860 for liability insurance with MMIA. A commissioner also noted semiannual landfill and street‑repair payments and annual dues for Montana Association of Counties and Montana League of Cities and Towns.
The commission approved an agreement with the Anaconda Police Protective Association that CEO Everett described as ‘‘similar to the other union contracts that we've settled’’ and said would provide ‘‘the same 4% across the board.’’ One commissioner disclosed that a family member works as a police officer but stated the county attorney advised there was not a disqualifying conflict; the commissioner participated in discussion and the vote.
Other approved items included a one‑year public health emergency preparedness task order to the master contract for $33,469 (to be paid quarterly) and acceptance of the Deer Lodge County Head Start corrective action plan after staff reported progress. The commission also approved Mount Carmel and Upper Hill Cemetery road improvements, accepted the resignation of Bill Willings from the Domestic Animal Task Force, reappointed Art Villasenor to the planning board and appointed Carolyn Pasha to the domestic animal task force as the animal professional. The commission also approved a special event permit for the Dead Ringer Horseshoe League celebration on Aug. 23, 2025 at Washoe Park.
