Vigo County commissioners approve dockets, assign tax-sale certificate to West Terre Haute and reappoint Casino Foundation representative

The board adopted Resolution No. 2026-3 to assign a tax-sale certificate for the parcel at 123 South 6th Street to the town of West Terre Haute after county staff said the property was the last one on the tax-out list. "If you have any questions, I can answer them for you," said Amy, county staff, who described the parcel and related process.
Commissioners also reappointed Karim Nassar to represent the commissioners on the Casino Foundation, replacing Terry Connolly. A motion to approve the appointment was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The assessor asked to be placed on the agenda to sign a contract for X Soft software; the board confirmed that the council had appropriated funding and approved the contract. The assessor later described this as a previously discussed item.
In response to a question from commissioners about recent assessment notices, the assessor said valuation increases in 2025 were broad: "across the county, you were looking at an increase in assessments anywhere from 25 to 45%." He added that assessment increases did not translate dollar-for-dollar to tax bills, offering his own example: "My assessment went up 30%. My tax bill is going up 12%."
Chair remarks closed the meeting with a call for caution on county roads, noting recent safety and infrastructure improvements and urging drivers to slow down. The chair then called for a recess.
