Canfield council hears updates on cemetery cleanup, yard debris pickup and short-term rental rules

The Canfield City Council spent part of its meeting on routine community updates, including reminders about cemetery cleanup, the 2026 stick-and-limb pickup schedule and possible changes to the city's short-term rental rules.
"A reminder about the cemetery cleanup, to remove decorations from gravesites by March 15," said a council member, adding that the city will clean up decorations after that date and residents can return decorations on Wednesday, April 18.
Public works outlined the 2026 stick-and-limb pickup by quadrant: Quad 1 will run April 6–10, Quad 2 April 13–17, Quad 3 April 20–24, and Quad 4 April 27–May 1.
Zoning inspector Tyler reported five permits in February with a year-to-date valuation of $142,850 and urged council feedback on short-term rental rules. "We're kinda want some kind of communication with that...maybe allowing it, not allowing it in the city, just cleaning up the language in the ordinance," Tyler said, noting multiple resident inquiries about houses being purchased to operate as Airbnbs.
Clerk Burnett reviewed plans for a concert on the green with 11 bands and an April 24 Arbor Day celebration at Hilltop Elementary, and noted a parks board resignation that will require a replacement. Council also recognized a community member recently added to the fire board and praised local firefighters for a recent animal rescue.
No formal policy vote on short-term rentals or other new ordinances was recorded during the meeting; staff were asked to return with proposed ordinance language if the council wishes to proceed.
The council adjourned after completing new business and routine reports.
