Shirley Allen Center renovation pitched to council; project funding credited to state and Rep. Huffman

Representatives for the Shirley Allen Center told the Lima City Council on June 23 that their project will renovate 6,600 square feet of an existing building and add about 2,100 square feet to expand community programming, health and wellness services, and educational offerings for youth and adults.
Gwendolyn R. Lane Harvey, identified herself as the liaison for the project and thanked the council and mayor for support. She said funding and capital-improvement assistance came from Representative Matt Huffman, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Real Estate and Land Management. Councilors praised the project as a neighborhood asset; one councilor noted personal memories of using the center and others pledged support.
Council then considered ordinance 1 30 25 authorizing a contract with Clyde Kleinfelder Inc. related to the project; the ordinance passed its first reading by recorded vote (6–0).
Why it matters: the renovation is intended to restore and expand programming space in a neighborhood facility, adding capacity for youth and adult services and creating new community programming. Council’s approval on first reading allows the administration to proceed with procurement and project planning.
