Veterans group plans $70,000 VSO hire; county clerk to cover initial training costs

At the Feb. 17 Hancock County meeting, visitors from veterans' services and board members discussed plans to add a Veterans Service Officer to the county's Veterans Assistance Commission staff.
Visitor Mark Sowers asked how the VAC budget is established. Commissioner Wayne Bollin explained that the VAC submits a budget and the board levies it. The minutes record that a VSO will be added at a salary of $70,000 per year. Raymond Siegrist, identified in the minutes as attending from Veterans Assistance, said the new employee will need to take training classes; County Clerk Holly Wilde-Tillman will use her county credit card to pay for those classes, according to the minutes.
Madisyn Bell, a visitor, thanked the board for housing grant funds and listed five grant winners. Chairman Mark Menn also noted that John Meixner, the Regional Office of Education superintendent, will retire April 1 and that Menn has recommended a replacement who is on the November ballot.
