Summary
Sergeant Engle told council the department’s K-9 unit grew to six dogs in 2025, logged about 445 deployments (roughly 75% narcotics sniffs), led to approximately 200 arrests and seized 689.08 grams of narcotics; the unit conducts annual recertification and monthly training.
Sergeant Engle of the Lima Police Department updated council on the department’s K-9 unit at the Jan. 5 meeting, reporting operational changes and last year’s activity.
"In 2025, Long Beach Park Canine Unit expanded our canine unit from 5 dual purpose patrol narcotic dogs to a total of 6 dual purpose patrol narcotic dogs," Sergeant Engle said, adding that Officer Nevan Stolly and his canine partner Creed joined the unit after graduating training in spring 2025. He said the department assigns two canines per shift and conducts 16 hours of training each month, in addition to annual recertification.
Sergeant Engle reported roughly 445 deployments during 2025, about 75% of which were narcotics sniffs, and said those deployments resulted in approximately 200 arrests. He also reported the unit seized 689.08 grams of narcotics and conducted roughly 10 demonstrations at local schools. The department is awaiting approval for donations of bulletproof and stab-resistant vests for four working canines from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.
Council members thanked the sergeant for the update and had no further questions recorded. The ordinance to accept canine vests (Ordinance 6-26) was subsequently amended and passed on first reading.
The department’s written reports and any formal donation paperwork are on file with the Clerk of Council.
