Skateboarders ask council for permission to repair, maintain city skate park

During the public comment period, Joseph Vaughn introduced Dante Gonzalez, and both asked council to allow community members to repair and maintain the skate park and to help preserve it as a safe, alcohol-free gathering space.
Gonzalez described weekly Sunday sessions and said the park attracts people of many ages from surrounding communities. “We are looking for permission for us to serve our community by repairing, improving and continually preserving this place,” Gonzalez told the council.
Mayor and council members responded by asking the group to share their outline with Parks Director Rick Stolle; the mayor noted Mr. Stolle was present and said the administration would be glad to talk with them about recommendations. The Parks Director was identified in the chamber as being behind the speakers and was offered as the immediate staff contact.
Council did not take formal action at the meeting to authorize repairs; councilors encouraged the group to coordinate with the Parks Department and said they appreciated community volunteers stepping forward to maintain local facilities.
The speakers left the council with an invitation to work with staff on next steps; the council suggested the group submit their plan details to staff by email or in person.
