Chief Mizely presented a proposed extension of the city’s fireworks contract with the current vendor (a family‑owned company the department has used for the past four years). He said the vendor offered a four‑year extension with a "one‑time 10% cost increase" and a package that could add a drone show for the holiday tree lighting, with fireworks continuing as a roughly 30‑minute Fourth of July display.
Mizely told council the vendor has a good safety record with the city and that the department receives a full inventory under fire code for each show. He said the drone displays would be shorter in winter (he estimated about 15 minutes in very cold conditions) and that the vendor offered a four‑year package capped at no more than $280,000 over the four‑year period for fireworks and drones combined.
Council members asked whether staff had shopped other vendors and whether the company is woman‑owned. Mizely said the vendor is family owned (Rossi family names were cited) and that staff had not recently shopped vendors because of the vendor’s performance and safety record; he said he believed the proposed insurance levels met or exceeded code requirements but would confirm.
Council discussed pursuing sponsorships to help offset costs; staff said they will pursue sponsorship opportunities. The item will be on Monday’s consent/regular agenda for formal consideration.
