Franklin officials ask county to restore requested fire tax increase to replace aging apparatus

Aimee Owens, Town of Franklin manager, appeared before the Board of Commissioners at the May 30 work session to ask that the county reconsider the proposed fire tax rate and restore the seven‑percent rate Franklin Fire and Rescue requested last year. Owens said the increase would generate debt‑service capacity to replace two apparatus that are 27 and 31 years old. Franklin Fire Chief Ben Ormond reiterated the need to replace the outdated equipment.
Owens acknowledged the board’s goal of being revenue neutral but said Franklin Fire and Rescue’s equipment condition requires capital investment. Commissioners heard the request and did not take a formal vote at the May 30 session; the issue may be taken up again as part of the county budget process.
