Commissioners postpone budget vote after parks, schools and revaluation concerns; parks director highlights $550,000 payment to Highlands

Seth Adams, director of Macon County Parks and Recreation, told the Board of Commissioners on June 8 that the county provides $550,000 each year to the Town of Highlands to help manage and operate recreation facilities — an amount he said represents about half of his department’s overall budget. Adams encouraged residents to complete a survey on the county website about improvements to Highlands Recreation Park on Georgia Road.
After presentations from department directors, several commissioners said they were not ready to vote on the proposed budget. Commissioner Shearl and Commissioner Antoine said they needed more time to review information. Commissioner Young and Commissioner Shields said education and the county’s schools should be addressed in the budget. Chairman Higdon asked for further discussion of the revaluation growth factor and allocations to fire departments and requested an end-of-year fiscal update; Finance Director Lori Carpenter said she could provide that information in October.
The board unanimously approved a motion to adjourn at 8:30 p.m., made by Commissioner Antoine and seconded by Chairman Higdon.
