Avery County seeks $5 million CDBG grant to build new senior center

Avery County commissioners on Oct. 6 authorized the county to apply for up to $5,000,000 from the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Neighborhood Revitalization Program to help fund construction of a new senior center.
During a public hearing led at 6:30 p.m., Michelle Ball with the High Country Council of Governments said this was the second public hearing for the application submission and that the county plans to request the program's maximum award to support the facility. There were no public comments during the hearing.
The board adopted a resolution directing the application process by unanimous vote on a motion by Wood Hall Young, Jr. and second from Dennis Aldridge. The resolution authorizes staff to file the CDBG Neighborhood Revitalization Program application and to take required procedural steps associated with the grant submission.
The CDBG Neighborhood Revitalization Program is a federal grant program administered at the state level; the county will work with the High Country Council of Governments on the application. The board did not vote on construction contracts or site selection at the meeting; those matters would be addressed later if the county is awarded funding.
The board set no new spending authority tonight beyond authorizing the application. The next regular meeting is Nov. 3, 2025, where related steps or follow-ups could appear on a future agenda.
