Avery County commissioners on Aug. 4 approved a series of budget amendments to roll forward grant revenues and recognize proceeds from asset sales.
Finance Officer Caleb Hogan presented the measures. The Department of Senior Services will roll $54,000 forward after receiving two $27,000 grants (Dogwood and Sisters of Mercy) to purchase a 15-passenger van; the board approved the roll forward 3-0. Parks and Recreation accepted a $20,000 North Carolina Youth Sports Grant for equipment and the board adopted a corresponding amendment. The sheriff’s office will add $20,000 in proceeds from the sale of a K9 to its budget for the K9 program.
The largest amendment moved $509,996 into FY2025–26 capital outlay for Transportation vehicles after the department was unable to purchase budgeted vans in prior years due to availability. Central Dispatch was approved to pay $11,452.50 to the High Country Council of Governments for prior-year addressing work after E911 determined the expense was not eligible; the board also approved repayment of a $221.50 ineligible E911 hotel expense. The EMS department will roll forward a $30,000 grant from the North Carolina Community Foundation for Hurricane Helene recovery.
All budget amendments recorded in the meeting minutes were adopted unanimously by the three commissioners present (3-0). The meeting record does not provide detailed project schedules, vendor names for vehicle purchases, or exact timing for expenditure; those details were not specified in the transcript.
