High Country COG briefs Avery County on $3.21 million opioid settlement allocation and local spending available

Sarah Price of the High Country Council of Governments updated the Avery County Board of Commissioners on the FY25–26 Opioid Settlement Fund Grant and local distribution.
Price reported that Avery County’s total allocation from the national opioid settlement programs is $3,211,705 through 2038, and that $716,839.88 was available to spend as of June 24, 2025. Applications for funding had been received from local organizations including Broken Wheel Ministries; Freedom Life Avery; High Country Community Health; Marjorie Williams Academy; Mediation and Restorative Justice Center; and Western Youth Network. Price said the committee was reviewing applications and would present memorandums of understanding at the next meeting.
The update identified the current available balance and listed applicant organizations; the board did not take action to award funds at the June 30 meeting.
