Council debates renaming Heritage Days to “Clinton Days”

Chair (S1) opened the conversation by asking Recreation Director Brooke Mitchell to explain the proposal. Brooke Mitchell said staff had received inquiries from vendors and residents who refer to the celebration as 'Clinton Days' and suggested aligning printed materials with common usage: "Just coming before you to see if we can possibly just change the name from Heritage Days to Clinton Days." One council member pushed back: "I wanna keep it heritage days," arguing the word 'heritage' preserves the event’s historical and nostalgic character and helps the city maintain a connection to its agricultural and community traditions (Committee member, S5). Several members said they were indifferent but acknowledged that a subset of residents preferred retaining 'heritage' in the official title.
Members proposed a practical compromise: retain 'Clinton Heritage Days' as the official name while allowing staff to use the shortened 'Clinton Days' in outreach and vendor materials where space or familiarity matters. The Chair asked whether staff could "make Clinton Heritage Days on the main thing, but then call it Clinton Days throughout as long as first reference is heritage days," and several members agreed that approach was acceptable.
No formal motion or vote was recorded during the discussion. Council direction to staff was procedural: keep 'Heritage Days' as the official name for now and permit the informal use of 'Clinton Days' on promotional items; revisit branding in a future, broader rebranding discussion if warranted.
The council moved on to other agenda items after giving staff that guidance; there was no immediate rebranding decision or ordinance change recorded in the session.
