Putnam County to expand GPS and camera systems across county vehicle fleet

Putnam County officials moved to expand GPS and camera systems across the county vehicle fleet, pre-filing Budgetary Transfer 26T039 at the March 10 Physical Services Committee meeting.
Commissioner of the Department of General Services John Tully said the transfer will allow the county to apply a GPS and camera solution to the remainder of the fleet. "This project places GPS and cameras in County vehicles allowing their locations to be tracked," Director of IT/GIS Thomas Lannon said, adding that the installation will provide location tracking and diagnostic information from the onboard computer. Lannon also said the GPS had previously been paid through the county radio system but the new radio system cannot support it, so the county is reallocating funds.
Legislators questioned fiscal impacts and coverage. Legislator Sayegh asked why the program was not included in the annual budget; Tully said precise amounts and vehicle lists were unknown when the prior budget was set but current budgetary capacity should cover the expansion and he will return to the Legislature if costs change. Director Lannon confirmed the Verizon contract provides countywide coverage and that equipment will be refreshed under that contract.
Chairman Gouldman moved to pre-file the resolution; Legislator Sayegh seconded and all were in favor. The pre-filing advances the measure for formal legislative consideration and possible future procurement and installation.
