Cedar County supervisors approve payroll, appointments and fair liquor licenses; meet briefly in closed session

At its March 10 meeting the Cedar County Board approved payroll and claims, appointed Sterling Benz to the Civil Service Commission, renewed and approved liquor licenses for the Cedar County Fair, approved a utility permit for Luman/CenturyLink, heard a CPR-class announcement, and held a closed session under Iowa Code §21.5(1)(i).
The Cedar County Board of Supervisors conducted routine county business and approved several administrative items during its March 10, 2026, meeting in Tipton.
The board approved payroll disbursements #204515–#204656 for the pay period ending Feb. 28, 2026 (to be paid March 6), and acknowledged a handwritten disbursement #445131 in the amount of $6,898.44 to Benefits, Inc. for self-funded medical claims; administrative corrections to claims #445122–#445130 to VISA were also noted. Supervisor Barnhart moved to approve payroll; Supervisor Kaufmann seconded. Vote: Ayes — Bell, Barnhart, Gaul, Kaufmann; Bixler absent.
The supervisors approved appointing Sterling Benz as the county-attorney appointee to the Civil Service Commission (moved by Supervisor Kaufmann, seconded by Supervisor Gaul), and approved two fair-related liquor licenses: a 12-month Class C license with outdoor service for the Cedar County Fair effective April 1, 2026 (renewal), and an eight-month Special Class C license with living quarters and outdoor service effective May 1, 2026 (new). Motions carried by recorded vote with Supervisor Bixler absent.
The board also approved a utility permit for Luman/CenturyLink near Durant in the Y14 area and applied the $100 fee (moved by Supervisor Gaul, seconded by Supervisor Barnhart). Public Health Director Wagaman informed the board the health department will host a CPR class on Friday.
At 9:03 a.m. the board moved into closed session under Iowa Code §21.5(1)(i); roll call for the motion to enter closed session recorded Ayes: Kaufmann, Barnhart, Gaul, Bell; Bixler absent. The board returned to open session at 9:26 a.m. and adjourned at 9:40 a.m.; the next regular meeting is March 17, 2026.
