The Nemaha County Board of Equalization elected Commissioner Bryan Mellage chair and Commissioner Larry Holtzman vice chair at its Jan. 20, 2021 organizational meeting in the Commissioners Chambers in Auburn.
County Clerk Diane Johnson opened the public hearing on Applications for Motor Vehicle Exemption (Form 457) and immediately closed it when no members of the public were present. The board then approved exemption applications for several nonprofit organizations. The approved exemptions included multiple vehicles for Good Samaritan Society (both the Auburn location and Good Samaritan Society – Home Care of Southeast Nebraska), Hearts United for Animals, LL Coryell & Sons Park Foundation, Peru State College Foundation and St. James Lutheran Church – Longbranch. Each motion passed on roll-call votes with all commissioners recorded as "aye."
Assessor Mallory Lempka presented a series of tax-list corrections (records numbered 2101-01 through 2101-10). The board approved corrections that, among other actions, restored exemptions for Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State College (deducted tax $47.80), applied late homestead exemptions and corrected parcel ownership where county records had listed the wrong owners. The corrections also accepted amended personal-property returns for Hinky Dinky Supermarkets for multiple tax years, and adjusted homestead exemptions for several residents. All of the listed corrections passed on unanimous roll-call votes.
The board completed its business and adjourned at 10:23 a.m. The full list of exempted vehicles and each tax-list correction number and amount appear in the official minutes on file with the Nemaha County Clerk.
