Nemaha County Board of Equalization elects Mellage chair, approves nonprofit vehicle tax exemptions

The Nemaha County Board of Equalization elected Commissioner Bryan Mellage chairman for 2022 and Commissioner Larry Holtzman vice chairman during its Jan. 19 meeting, County Clerk Diane Johnson said as she called the session to order.
The board then approved the meeting agenda and the Dec. 22, 2021 minutes by roll call. Chairman Mellage opened a public hearing on 2022 Applications for Motor Vehicle Exemption (Form 457), noted no members of the public were present, and closed the hearing.
Treasurer Jana Gerdes presented exemption requests and the board approved motor-vehicle exemptions for multiple qualifying nonprofit organizations. Motions carried by roll call to exempt vehicles for Good Samaritan Society Home Care of Southeast Nebraska (several 2012, 2014 and 2017 sedans and fusions), Good Samaritan Society of Auburn (various service vehicles and a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox), Hearts United for Animals (two pickups, a cargo van and a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse), Peru State College Foundation (2021 Ford SUV), St. James Lutheran Church – Longbranch (2012 Chevrolet sedan), and LL Coryell & Sons Park Foundation (1999 Chevrolet pickup).
The board also approved assessor-submitted tax-list corrections from the Nebraska Department of Revenue for several homestead adjustments noted by the County Assessor.
The meeting adjourned after the board completed routine business; County Clerk Diane Johnson certified the minutes are part of the official record and available at the county clerk's office.
