Tift County commissioners authorize LMIG application for New River Church Road ahead of new middle school

The Tift County Board of Commissioners on Monday authorized Chairman Tony McBrayer to submit a Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) application for improvements to New River Church Road to support construction of a planned middle school.
County Manager Jim Carter told the board the estimated construction cost for the project is $4,444,320.90 and asked for the board's authorization for the chairman to execute the grant cover letter and application.
The request prompted a question from Commissioner Stan Stalnaker about whether a traffic signal will be required at the intersection of New River Church Road and Old Ocilla. Carter said he will determine whether a signal is needed and, if so, will add the cost of that work to the grant application.
Commissioner Paul Webb moved to authorize the chairman to execute the LMIG application and cover letter; Commissioner Tyler Riddle seconded the motion. The board approved the measure 6-0, with Chairman Tony McBrayer voting. Commissioner Greg Wood was absent.
The board recorded that there was no executive session to report. With no further business, Commissioner Tyler Riddle moved to adjourn; Commissioner Paul Webb seconded and the motion carried 6-0.
Next steps: the chairman is authorized to sign and submit the LMIG application and cover letter; county staff will follow up on the signal question and, if required, include the additional cost in the application.
