Pacific County commissioners approve routine purchases, hires and new backup internet and VOIP hardware

The board approved vendor warrants totaling $279,505.51 and passed routine consent-agenda items by voice vote. Commissioners authorized purchasing a Sharp multifunction printer for the prosecuting attorney’s office for $8,369 plus tax and a clerk’s-office remodel with Western Washington Construction LTD of Aberdeen for $20,652.50 to create a private space for confidential matters, both to be paid from department funds.
The board denied one small administrative request: a motion to waive a $13.99 late Visa fee for Michael Rothman failed after several members voted nay.
Public Works change orders and personnel actions also moved forward. Commissioners approved change order No. 1 with Bockers Heating and Cooling for HVAC replacements at the Pacific County Public Safety Building for a total of $34,002.39, funded from the cumulative reserve fund, after staff explained original bid unit sizes were misidentified and larger units were required. The board approved hiring Michael Adams as a facilities maintenance assistant effective Dec. 1, 2025, pending a background check.
The board also approved a purchase of Microsoft enterprise licenses from SHI for approximately $7,985.68 and authorized a Discover merchant-settlement claim submission for a class-action processing-fee settlement (amount not specified in the record).
On communications and resiliency, the board approved a Starlink backup Internet service (hardware not to exceed $2,500; $290 per month) to provide an alternate path for the county’s cloud-based phone and critical services if the main Comcast feed is disrupted. IT staff explained the county had not previously had a structured backup Internet source and said the service would reduce the risk of outages. The board separately approved a VOIP hardware/package and 12 months of software and cloud support (vendor spelled in the transcript as "Mushworm Networks") not to exceed $5,000 to enable two Internet sources and automatic failover, with staff noting the equipment can also accept cellular connectivity in catastrophic outages.
Votes on these routine items were conducted as voice votes and carried as recorded on the meeting record. The board recessed for a 10:00 public hearing later in the morning.
