Historic Resources Board asks county to pick Marcus Daly statue site as grant work continues

Rob Wren, representing the Historic Resources Board, asked the commission to select a site from several county-owned options (and one private corner) for a full bronze Marcus Daly statue so grant applications and budgets can proceed.
Wren said the board has secured about $55,000 so far and has roughly $60,000 in additional grant applications either submitted or in preparation. He provided preliminary cost figures: concrete foundation work estimated at about $10,000, a granite block base ranging roughly from $7,000 to $15,000 depending on size, and a quoted figure of about $82,000 for the bronze sculpture; shipping costs were not yet determined.
Wren reviewed site pros and cons (courthouse, library/clock area, Kennedy Commons, Durston Park, and one private corner at the former Daly Bank) and emphasized the group prefers a site on public property or an easement if private property is chosen. Commissioners asked staff to check property ownership for Friendship Park and whether an easement or dedication would be feasible on the private corner if the commission favored that location.
One commissioner said the courthouse west of the main walkway appeared the strongest option because of visibility and the ability to install a plaque explaining Marcus Daly's role in creating the community.
Next steps: staff will investigate property ownership and easement options and the board will pursue URA and other grant funding; the board intends to seek URA funding on Sept. 18.
