County asks MDT for speed study and traffic impact study on Highway 1

Carl explained MDT recommended the studies as a first step: "They really heard us out and said the first step of the process is to request a speed study and a traffic impact study," he said, adding the studies would likely be scheduled next spring or summer. Commissioners emphasized that while speed studies measure current vehicle speeds, a traffic impact study is more useful for considering turning movements, vehicle types and infrastructure changes such as turn lanes or acceleration lanes.
Commissioners noted frustration at past delays and warned that even with study recommendations, implementation could take years. The commission voted unanimously to approve the request to MDT.
