Commission sends $4.7 million fire‑hall bond question to voters, approves architect pre‑bond work and legal engagement

The Anaconda Deer Lodge County commission on Aug. 6 approved Resolution 24‑14 to place a question before qualified electors of the Anaconda City Fire District seeking authority to issue general‑obligation bonds in one or more series up to a principal amount of $4,700,000 to fund additions, renovations and upgrades to the city fire hall and pay related issuance costs.
Commissioner Burdette moved approval; Commissioner Gallagher seconded, and the chair announced the motion passed unanimously.
The commission also approved a pre‑bond services agreement with SMA Architecture to develop updated plans and pre‑bond work. Commissioner Beausoleil urged the commission and architect to use current needs rather than 10‑year‑old illustrative drawings, stressing that “we build for the department we have” and recommending consideration of increased staffing and operational needs during the budget process. A public commenter who represents the fire department described revisions to include five living quarters and three bays and confirmed ventilation hookups for apparatus.
Separately the commission approved an engagement letter with Darcy Whitney of Lewis & Whitney to provide the legal services connected to bond issuance and related work. CEO Everett and the county attorney had no additional comments before the commission approved both items unanimously.
Next steps: staff will proceed with pre‑bond architectural services, finalize bond question materials for voter consideration and coordinate legal engagement for bond issuance.
