Fire Chief JW Hopper reported the Laurel Fire Department responded to 35 calls during the reporting period and logged about 494 total hours for firefighters and officers. The department has 30 members; three firefighters are in rookie school and one recently resigned for time‑availability reasons.
Hopper said the department completed roughly 180 hours of training year‑to‑date, including Cold Water Rescue, joint drills with EMS on a new ambulance and training on police vests. The Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) fully funded an upgrade to the department's Brush 5 vehicle, which received a custom bed and new toolboxes, Hopper's report said. The department also noted a $5,000 donation from CHS and ongoing outreach with Northwest Energy.
Hopper flagged safety concerns about failing garage doors at the station that could prevent trucks from exiting and described ongoing coordination with the school district about 4th‑of‑July fireworks and NFPA guidance for safety distances.
