Calhoun County Commission approves nuisance abatements, demolition award and multiple surplus declarations

The Calhoun County Commission on Feb. 26 approved a slate of actions aimed at addressing blighted properties and disposing of surplus county equipment.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended proceeding with public nuisance abatements for 3931 Bynum Leatherwood Road (Anniston) and 5328 Glade Road (Anniston). Commissioner Henderson moved to adopt the resolutions and Commissioner Shears seconded; the Commission approved both measures by unanimous voice vote.
County staff also recommended dismissing nuisance cases for five properties (0 Paul St.; 1441 Lenlock Lane; 320 Old County Rd. 109; 5302 Long Ave.; and 580 Cottaquilla Rd.). Commissioner Henderson moved to adopt the dismissals, Commissioner Wilson seconded, and the Commission approved the dismissals unanimously.
Mr. Mize presented a nuisance invoice of $330.00 for 703 W. 44th St., Anniston, owned by John and Lona Pitts; Commissioner Shears moved to approve the invoice and Commissioner Wilson seconded. The Commission approved the invoice by unanimous voice vote.
The Commission declared additional public nuisances at 185 Turley Dr. (owner Benetta Downer) and 1229 Rhodes St. (owner Harvel Phillip Brown); Commissioner Henderson moved the declarations and Commissioner Shears seconded; both passed unanimously.
County staff presented a resolution awarding the nuisance demolition/removal bid for properties #1–#15 to Wendy Thornton; property #16 received no bids. Commissioner Henderson moved to adopt the resolution, Commissioner Shears seconded, and the award was approved unanimously.
Separately, the Commission declared several county assets surplus and approved disposal or sale at auction, including a JLG lift assigned to the Highway Department, Unimac washers assigned to the Sheriff’s Office, equipment from the Commission Office, and items assigned to the Landfill. Each surplus resolution was moved, seconded and approved by unanimous voice vote.
Chairman Patterson closed the items without further discussion. The Commission carried every vote related to nuisance, demolition and surplus actions unanimously.
