The University of Illinois Board of Trustees voted unanimously to elect Howard S. Engel as the board’s treasurer, the trustees announced at their September open meeting in Urbana-Champaign.
Chair (role) told the board that Lester H. McKeever Jr. had submitted his resignation and that Engel, a retired Deloitte partner and longtime adjunct lecturer at the Gies College of Business, had been recommended to serve as treasurer through Jan. 2027. Trustee Cepeda moved to nominate Engel, citing his professional experience and years of service to the university; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Engel briefly thanked the board for the opportunity and said he was “honored to do so and would hope to build on the legacy of Lester McKeever.” Chair welcomed Engel and invited him to begin the treasurer’s duties.
The election was handled under a special order of business included in the board packet and supported by committee review. Trustees did not offer further debate on the nomination at the meeting. The board then returned to its regular agenda and other business.
The board’s action makes Howard S. Engel the system treasurer until Jan. 2027 unless the board acts again to change that term.
