Boca Raton adopts updated fire‑prevention code, adds online reporting and new detection requirements

The City Council voted 5–0 Feb. 25 to adopt an updated fire prevention and protection ordinance that repeals and replaces Chapter 7 of the city code and adopts the latest Florida Fire Prevention Code with local amendments.
Assistant Chief and Fire Marshal Jay Sumner summarized the changes: reorganization for clarity and usability, new requirements to upload reports related to building fire‑protection systems to an internet‑based inspection system, premise and unit identification provisions to aid first responders, new sections addressing rubbish and linen chutes and LPG containers, and added subsections requiring detection for carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in specified circumstances. "The adoption of this ordinance ensures that the fire rescue services is enforcing the most current codes and standards," Sumner said.
Sumner noted the state fire marshal issues new editions of the Florida Fire Prevention Code every three years and referenced Florida law requiring adoption of current editions. No substantive public opposition or requests were raised at the hearing; the council adopted the ordinance by voice/roll call without dissent.
The ordinance updates local code to align with current state standards and adds administrative and technical requirements intended to improve clarity for the regulated community and enhance firefighter and public safety.
