Jeff Speck joins Boca Raton walkability study; staff eye June charrette and late‑summer demos

Jeff Speck, the author and urban designer known for Walkable City, was introduced to the Boca Raton Community Redevelopment Agency at its April 7 meeting and outlined his advisory role on downtown and Palmetto Park Road design work. Speck said he will help develop alternative street configurations and integrate the government campus master plan into a cohesive downtown design.
Alta consulting staff gave a recap of the East Palmetto Park Road analysis and outreach, saying they collected thousands of community comments and concluded that a 'no build' option was not under consideration. Zach Beer, the city’s public works and engineering director, said the city has a work order (work order number 3) with Alta that covers downtown broadly and that the initial discussions with the combined Alta–Speck team are expected to begin over the summer.
On timing, Speck said the team has held space in its calendar for a short, immersive design charrette tentatively scheduled for June. Alta and staff described short-term demonstration projects that focus on safety improvements—examples include intersection treatments on Meisner Boulevard and targeted work at US 1 and Dixie —and said such quick-build installations could be implemented within a month or two after approvals and depending on material availability. City staff cautioned that larger temporary demonstration configurations requiring full traffic control would need additional scoping and may push installations into late summer or beyond.
Commissioners emphasized placemaking and safety as priorities alongside traffic engineering. A staff representative said the Alta–Speck collaboration will allow the consultants to assess Palmetto Park Road closely while also considering downtown connectivity across the railroad tracks and links to the Brightline station.
No formal vote was taken on the consultant work at this meeting; staff said any additional scoping or expansions to the work order would be brought forward later. The city also said updates would be posted on the campus project website and that a follow-up report will be presented at the next CRA meeting.
