Parks staff report maintenance, events wrap-up and staff farewells

Parks staff delivered several updates after routine plat business at the Aug. 5 meeting. Brian (introduced during the meeting as the staff presenter) summarized recent maintenance: tree removals, replacement of a few water fountains, alley cleanups and installation of a sign at the boat ramp intended to discourage illegal rental operations.
An operations staff member said the sign targets illegal rentals that had been operating from multiple boat docks. Staff also described cleanup and assessment work at a recently acquired old Methodist church property; staff said the current work is largely protecting what remains and assessing the building’s condition.
Events staff reported that the Concert by the Lake season concluded successfully and that the July 4 celebration drew large crowds despite rain. Staff previewed fall and winter programming, including Scarana Square and a hometown-Christmas event; registration for the father-daughter dance will open in the fall. Staff confirmed both pools will close on the coming Friday and noted past experience made a dog splash day a maintenance challenge because of filtration and draining requirements.
Committee members praised staff and volunteers for a fast-moving public-private project and said programming of the new facility will begin soon. The board also recognized Jason Alvarado for his years of service and marked his last day with thanks from staff and members. The meeting adjourned at 6:18 p.m.
