Board adopts budget adjustments, approves $74,047 for 911 phone equipment and allows sheriff to seek vest grant

The Surry County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 5 approved a set of budget amendments and equipment purchases, including $74,047.21 for 911 phone-system equipment and several capital transfers for school projects.
Communications Director Nick Brown told the board that 911 phone-system equipment totaling $74,047.21 had been ordered during the FY 2024 budget cycle but billing was delayed because construction at the new communications facility prevented earlier invoicing. Upon motion by Commissioner Melissa Hiatt, seconded by Commissioner Mark Marion, the board voted unanimously to approve the purchase and adopt Budget Amendment #10 to record the expense.
Earlier in the meeting the board approved the consent agenda, which included a Sheriff’s Office request to apply for a 50% matching grant to replace 20 tactical vests for the S.W.A.T. team; if awarded, the local share would be $37,476.31. The consent agenda also included approval of a NetApp Pure data-storage upgrade and additional hard drives and referenced Budget Amendment #9. The minutes and budget tables show transfers to school capital projects totaling $393,000 that fund architect fees of $131,000 each for North Surry, Surry Central and East Surry high school renovations.
All listed consent and budget actions were approved unanimously. The board adjourned at 9:06 p.m.
