Calhoun County commission adopts dozens of nuisance resolutions, owners seek help

The Calhoun County Commission unanimously approved a slate of public-nuisance actions during its Sept. 11 meeting, adopting abatement resolutions for 17 properties, dismissing nuisance actions for eight others and declaring 18 additional properties to be public nuisances.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize presented the lists and recommended the abatement, dismissal and declaration actions. Commissioner Shears moved to adopt the abatement resolutions and Commissioner Wilson seconded; that motion carried by unanimous voice vote. Later motions for dismissals (moved by Commissioner Patterson, seconded by Commissioner Wilson) and declarations (moved by Commissioner Henderson, seconded by Commissioner Shears) also passed unanimously.
Several property owners addressed the commission. Willie Jefferson Davis, owner of 0 Gurnee Avenue, asked for more time to clean his property, saying he is 80 years old and has struggled to secure cleanup assistance; Mr. Mize offered to meet with him after the meeting to discuss options. Benny Lovell, owner of 1023 W. 32nd Street, said he has hired someone to assist and that cleanup has been complicated by finding needles on his property. Angelea Ledbetter, speaking for owners of 406 N. Hunter Street, said the house has been boarded and posted with no-trespassing signs and that the owners plan to clean the property.
The resolutions and applications remain in county files. Mr. Mize told commissioners he would meet with owners who attended the meeting to discuss next steps and assistance options. The commission announced its next meeting for Sept. 25, 2025.
The vote tally for each motion was recorded as unanimous voice votes; the meeting minutes list the full property addresses and owners for each adopted or declared nuisance and for each dismissed case.
