Calhoun County commissioners on July 24 authorized publication of a notice required by Amendment 772 of the Alabama Constitution and set a public hearing for 10:00 a.m. on Aug. 7, 2025, to discuss acquisition of property and assets from Oneworld Canine Facility for the purpose of establishing and operating a county animal shelter and related services.
County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy presented the resolution and Commissioner Patterson, speaking in favor, called the opportunity "once in a lifetime" to acquire premium property for the shelter. The motion to adopt the notice and set the hearing was approved unanimously by voice vote.
In the same portion of the agenda the commission approved an employment contract modification for the Animal Control Director, effective July 26, 2025, for a three-year term ending July 26, 2028; the board authorized the chairman to sign the agreement. The minutes record that commissioners treated the acquisition notice and the personnel contract as separate, adopted items; no formal acquisition decision was made at the July 24 meeting.
The public hearing on Aug. 7, 2025, will provide the formal public forum required by Amendment 772 for the county to discuss acquisition of specific real and personal property and decide on next steps.
