Calhoun County approves dozens of public-nuisance actions and awards demolition contract

Calhoun County commissioners on July 24 approved a slate of public-nuisance actions covering dozens of properties across the county, including abatements, dismissals, invoices for removal costs, and new nuisance declarations.
County Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize presented the board with three related packages of cases. The commission voted unanimously to proceed with abatement resolutions for 15 properties after Mize outlined addresses and ownership. During that discussion, Sheila Bartamen (daughter of owner Ima J. Wright) told the commission her mother had died and the property, 3418 Hill Street in Anniston, had been in probate but is now being cleaned. Owner Shane Davis said cleanup at 1409 Montevallo Road in Weaver has begun.
The commission also voted unanimously to dismiss 15 other public-nuisance matters after Mize reported owners had been notified and no representatives were present.
The board approved two invoices to recover removal costs: $6,026.00 for 1014 W 32nd Street (owner Kara Smith) and $3,526.00 for 904 W 32nd Street (Mary Ann O'Dell Estate & David O'Dell). Mize recommended those amounts as the cost of removal; the commission approved them by voice vote.
Mize then recommended declaring 17 additional properties public nuisances; several owners or family members spoke. Ezman Lopez said his family purchased the property at 3600 Ammons Street about a year ago and has been cleaning it on weekends. Walter McCain said he had removed most vehicles from 2520 Ammons Street but needs more time because his tow truck broke down. After Mize offered to meet with those present, Commissioner Henderson moved to declare the listed properties nuisances; the motion passed unanimously.
County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy presented a separate resolution awarding the Public Nuisance Demolition and Removal contract for one bidded property to Wendy Thornton for $2,000.00. Commissioner Patterson moved adoption; the motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
The commission did not record any dissenting votes on nuisance business; all motions related to abatements, dismissals, invoices, declarations and the demolition contract were approved unanimously.
The commission offered to meet privately with property owners present to discuss cleanup timelines and resources; no additional directions or deadlines for remediation were recorded in the minutes.
