County and chamber announce drug take-back day, local events and education forum

During the public comment portion of the Calhoun County Commission meeting on April 11, community representatives made several announcements.
Chandy Gordon of the Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) announced National Drug Take Back Day on April 27 and said ASAP will be set up at four locations — Jacksonville, Anniston, Oxford and Cleburne County — to collect unused or old prescription medications and needles.
Audrey Maxwell, tourism director for the Chamber of Commerce, listed multiple weekend events including historical walking tours in Oxford, the Camp Lee 5K trail run, the Noble Street Festival, and the Sunny King Criterium, and said the Chief Ladiga Landing extension groundbreaking would take place next week and Hess Grocery at the McClellan Horse Trails will open Saturday.
Jakob Williamson, the Chamber’s public affairs coordinator, announced the State of Higher Education event on April 24 with Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Murphy at the Gadsden State Community College Ayers Campus. Commissioner Terry Howell also urged attendance at CASA’s No Excuse for Child Abuse Candle Vigil on April 24 at 7 p.m. at Oxford’s Veterans Park.
