Calhoun County Commission approves multiple nuisance abatements, dismissals and related invoices

The Calhoun County Commission voted unanimously Dec. 18 to proceed with public-nuisance abatements on 10 properties, dismiss nuisance findings on 12 others, approve four invoices for nuisance removal costs, and declare four additional properties as public nuisances.
County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy introduced the items on the agenda. Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended proceeding with abatement resolutions for 10 properties whose addresses and owners were listed in the meeting minutes. Commissioner Danny Shears moved to adopt the abatement resolutions; the motion passed by voice vote of the commissioners present.
Property owner Jerel Greathouse spoke to the Commission about one listed parcel at 998 Mary Jane Drive, saying medical issues had delayed his cleanup and asking for additional time; Mize said he would meet with Greathouse after the session to discuss accommodations.
Mize also recommended dismissing public-nuisance findings on 12 other properties; Commissioner Patterson moved to adopt the dismissal resolutions and Commissioner Shears seconded. The Commission approved the dismissals unanimously.
The county approved four invoices for removal work on separate properties, with line-item amounts of $330.00, $330.00, $530.00 and $230.00 as presented by Mize; Commissioner Wilson moved and Commissioner Shears seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.
Finally, Mize recommended declaring four additional properties as public nuisances; Commissioner Shears moved to adopt the declarations and Commissioner Wilson seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The meeting record lists addresses and owner names for all properties referenced; owners were notified of the meeting and most did not appear in person. The Commission took no further public testimony on these items at the meeting.
