Calhoun County Commission approves multiple nuisance abatements, invoices and authorizes jail medical agreement

Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended abatement proceedings for seven properties and the commission adopted the resolutions by unanimous voice vote after a motion from Commissioner Patterson and a second from Commissioner Shears. Mize also recommended dismissing nuisance findings for four properties; that dismissal was adopted unanimously after a motion by Commissioner Henderson and a second from Commissioner Wilson. Joseph Lee Davila spoke on behalf of the owner of 925 Lloyd Street to thank the commission for the dismissal.
Mize asked the commission to approve two invoices for the cost of nuisance removal: $5,026.00 for 3525 Oakridge Avenue (Houneal Hill Estate c/o Jean Chastain) and $6,526.00 for 600 S. Ledbetter Street (Rose Johnson Carr). Commissioners Henderson and Shears moved and seconded approval of the invoices; the motion carried by unanimous voice vote. The combined invoice total reported in the minutes is $11,552.00.
Later in the meeting Mr. Mize recommended declaring 15 additional properties as public nuisances; Commissioner Shears moved to declare the properties as recommended, Commissioner Patterson seconded, and the motion carried unanimously. The minutes note that owners had been notified in advance and that 15 resolutions are in the file.
County Attorney Julie Borrelli presented an agreement with Fresenius Kidney Care to provide jail inmate care and the commission authorized Chairman Terry Howell to sign the agreement after a motion by Commissioner Patterson and a second by Commissioner Wilson. Borrelli also presented and the commission adopted a resolution concerning future approval of administrative policy and procedures and a resolution to accept a grant for Cane Creek Community Gardens; both passed by unanimous voice votes.
The meeting record lists the addresses and owners for the abatements, dismissals and nuisance declarations and notes that formal resolution documents are on file with the commission. The meeting adjourned following a public-comment opportunity and a motion to adjourn by Commissioner Henderson.
