Calhoun County Commission approves multiple nuisance abatements, tables one after homeowner update

Chairwoman Henderson and the Calhoun County Commission unanimously approved several public-nuisance abatement resolutions and related invoices during their March 13 meeting.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended abatement action on five properties, but the commission tabled the abatement for 209 Oak Road after owner Tamecia Turner told the commission she had cleaned the yard and was obtaining car covers. Commissioner Patterson moved to table the abatement; Commissioner Shears seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
The commission adopted abatement resolutions for the other four properties recommended by Mize (1008 Four Mile Road; 55 Tiffany Lane; 1121 Comanche Trail; 305 48th Street) on a motion by Commissioner Shears, seconded by Commissioner Wilson.
Mize also recommended dismissing nuisance designations on four properties (331 Old Gadsden Hwy; 3520 Gurnee Avenue; 1810 Morrisville Road; 517 Cherokee Trail). Commissioner Patterson moved to adopt the dismissal resolutions; Commissioner Wilson seconded and the dismissals were approved unanimously.
The commission approved invoices to recover the cost of nuisance removal: $4,026.00 for 1307 Montevallo Road (owner Kay Taylor), $226.00 for 6008 Holly Trace (owner Deborah Lynn Davis), $4,026.00 for 3624 Old Birmingham Hwy (owners Jeffrey and Katrenia Humphrey), and an invoice for 811 N. Ledbetter Street (owners Douglas E. and Margaret A. Plath) (amount not specified in the minutes). Commissioner Wilson moved to approve the invoices and Commissioner Howell seconded; the motion passed by voice vote.
Separately, Mize recommended declaring public nuisances at 10 additional properties; Jacqueline Bass, a resident of 74 Gaines Circle, told commissioners she has been working to clean up nuisances at her property. Commissioner Shears moved to declare the listed properties as public nuisances; Commissioner Howell seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The actions taken on nuisance abatements and dismissals carry follow-up steps for staff to execute the abatements and process invoicing and resolutions as recorded in the commission’s files. The commission adjourned at 10:25 a.m.
