Calhoun County proclaims Human Trafficking Awareness Month and honors long-serving county employee

At its Jan. 9 meeting the Calhoun County Commission issued two ceremonial proclamations and heard a series of brief public comments.
Commissioner Patterson presented a proclamation honoring Shasta Platt for 23 years of service as a county employee; Commissioner Wilson said Ms. Platt will be greatly missed. Commissioner Wilson also presented a proclamation recognizing January as Human Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Month to Jessica Smith and Pam Stack of the United Way. United Way representatives expressed gratitude and said the proclamation will help raise public awareness of the issue.
During public comment, Jody Whaley, tournament director for the Principals and Coaches Association, thanked the commission for helping county schools during tournament season. Audrey Maxwell, tourism director for the Chamber of Commerce, announced the ALEAF annual fundraising dinner and that the Alabama Tourism Department has named 2025 “The Year of Alabama Trails,” and reminded the commission about an upcoming Heritage Festival. Calhoun County CFO Melissia Wood publicly thanked Shasta Platt for her service.
