Calhoun County Commission orders cleanup, declares 10 properties public nuisances

The Calhoun County Commission on Jan. 9 unanimously approved a series of actions targeting blighted properties across the county, voting to proceed with abatements, dismiss several nuisance findings, approve removal invoices and declare a set of properties as public nuisances.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended abatement resolutions for five properties in Anniston (308 Mountain View Road; 3030 Old Birmingham Highway; 1865 Parkwood Drive; 1404 High Oak Drive; and 1072 W. 33rd Street). Commissioners adopted the abatement resolutions by voice vote. Mize also recommended dismissing nuisance findings for five other properties (2435 Eulaton Road; 428 S. Marshall Street; 2425 Griffis II Street; 315 W. Medders Drive; and 107 Wayside Drive), and the commission approved those dismissals unanimously.
The commission approved three invoices to cover costs of nuisance removals: $3,526.00 for 1209 Louise Drive in Weaver (American General Finance c/o Kerri L. Pruitt), $2,026.00 for 51 Johnny Street in Anniston (Sandra Evans), and $2,026.00 for 4811 Old Birmingham Highway in Anniston (Jeanmarie T. Corrieri). The total approved for those invoices is $7,578.00.
Mize also recommended, and the commission voted to adopt, resolutions declaring 10 additional properties public nuisances. The properties listed included 4124 Bynum Leatherwood Road; 1016 Alexandria Road (owner Mike Hockenberry addressed the commission saying he is working to clean up the property); 110 Brown Street; 2401 and 2423 Newborn Street; 2306 W. D Street; 4900 Saks Road; 423 54th Street; 728 S. Colvin Street; and 150 Carolyn Drive. Commissioners took the actions by unanimous voice vote of all commissioners present.
All owners were notified in advance of the meeting; no owners attended for the abatement or invoice items, and one owner (Mike Hockenberry) spoke in the matter where noted. The commission’s actions were recorded as resolutions filed with the county.
