At its Oct. 23, 2025 meeting, the Calhoun County Commission adopted a package of routine and substantive actions including multiple public-nuisance resolutions, contract awards, grant authorization and board appointments.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize presented recommendations to proceed with abatement on 11 properties (addresses and owners listed in the minutes). Representatives for two properties told the Commission they were making improvements: Jason Doland said work was underway at 629 S. Hillman, and Jacqueline Bass said clearing work was occurring at 46 New Prospect Street. Commissioners voted to adopt the abatement resolutions by unanimous voice vote.
Mr. Mize also recommended dismissing nuisance cases for 10 properties; the Commission adopted those dismissals unanimously. Separately, Mr. Mize recommended declaring 17 additional properties as public nuisances; Commissioners adopted those declarations unanimously. The minutes record that affected owners were notified for the listed properties; most had no representative at the meeting.
The Commission approved an invoice of $726.00 to remove a nuisance at 640 Mountain Road, Ohatchee. The body also awarded the public-nuisance-removal bid to the sole bidder, Wendy Thornton, via a resolution that passed unanimously.
County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy presented procurement actions related to regional debris response: the Commission extended the Alabama Joint Bid for debris removal services to DRC Emergency Services, Inc. for Region 6 and awarded monitoring services to Thompson Consulting Services for Region 6; both contracts are effective Dec. 1, 2025, through Nov. 30, 2026, and were approved unanimously.
The Commission authorized an agreement with GoFormz, Inc., for digital form services used by the coroner’s office for $1,080.00 (effective Oct. 28, 2025–Oct. 27, 2026) and authorized the Chairman to sign a Courthouse HVAC agreement with Whorton Engineering once finalized. Commissioners also approved submitting a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grant application for $72,000 to continue funding for the 7th Judicial Circuit Domestic Violence Crime Unit.
Appointments and reappointments approved included reappointing Curtis Maxwell to the McClellan Development Authority (MDA), appointing Jasmine Smith to the MDA to fill another vacancy, reappointing Katherine Kirby to the Library Board for a four-year term (effective Nov. 1, 2025), and appointing Melissia Wood to the Coosa Valley Youth Services Board (effective Nov. 1, 2025). The Commission adopted a resolution to cancel the Nov. 27 meeting, reschedule the Dec. 11 meeting to Dec. 18, and cancel the Dec. 25 meeting for the holidays.
All motions recorded in the minutes were carried by unanimous voice vote of the Commissioners present. The meeting adjourned at 10:37 a.m.; the next meeting was announced for Nov. 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
